Red Soya Beans Poriyal

Ingredients:

  • Red soya beans - 2 cups
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Oil - 2-3 tbsp
  • Onion - 1
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dhal - 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 8-10
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Jeera powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt - 1 tsp
Directions:
  1. Wash the red soya beans. Put it in a pressure cooker. Add enough salt so that the beans are just fully immersed in the water. Cook it in the cooker for 1 whistle and turn off the stove.
  2. Open the vessel. The beans should be fully cooked. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, jeera powder and salt. Mix and keep aside.
  3. In a different pan, heat the oil. Add the mustard seeds once the oil is hot. Add the urad dhal, curry heave and chopped onion. Stir fry until the onion is golden brown. Add this to the beans. 
  4. Add some water to the beans if required. Cook in a low to medium flame until it is thick. Red soya beans poriyal is ready!
From top-left: Red soya beans in pressure cooker. Add water. Pressure cooked soya beans. Add salt, red chili powder, turmeric and salt and mix evenly.

From top left: Mustard seeds. urad dhal. chopped onion. onion and curry leaves with spices in oil. Add the onion to the beans. and let it boil for some time.

Red soya beans poriyal is ready!

Serving Suggestions:
  • If the beans are too watery in the end, add gram pea flour to thicken faster.
  • Tastes good with sambar/paruppu/curd and rice.
