Paruppu [Yellow Dhal]

Ingredients:
  • Toor Dhal (thuvaram paruppu) - 2 portions
  • Water - 5 portions
  • Oil - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt - 1 tsp

Directions:
  1. Wash the toor dhal and drain. Add the required amount of water according to the pressure cooker specification. Ensure that the water will be sufficient for the dhal to cook in the pressure cooker. Add the oil and the turmeric powder. 
  2. Close the cooker and cook for 1 whistle. Reduce the flame and keep for 5-10 mins.
  3. Open the cooker. Add water if required. Add salt to taste. Paruppu is ready!
Cleaning the dhal and adding turmeric and oil before cooking in the pressure cooker.

After opening the cooker, Add salt and water as required. Mash to ensure the dhal is of uniform consistency.

Paruppu is ready!

Serving Suggestions:
  • To add some flavor to the dhal, heat some oil in a tawa. Add a 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds to the hot oil. Then add 1/2 tsp of urad dal, some curry leaves, dried red chilli, and one chopped onion. Stir fry until the onion is golden brown. Add this to the dhal, mix, and serve.
  • Tastes good with ghee and rasam. 
  • Can be served with appalam.
